huawei e220 in ubuntu
if you have a rather new verison of ubuntu it should work right out of the box. just plug it in and you should see it in the network manager (where you also see available wireless lans and such). slect it and it will ask you for your pin and connect to the internet.
if you want some mor information for example to find out why the heck your connection is so damn slow, you need umtsmon
you can download the sources from http://umtsmon.sourceforge.net
download the sources and then open a terminal
sudo su
apt-get install build-essential libusb-dev qt3-dev-tools libqt3-headers
cd /usr/src
tar xzvf /wherever/you/downloaded/it/to/umtsmon.....tar.gz
cd umtsmon<version>
qmake
make clean all
lupdate umtsmon.pro
lrelease umtsmon.pro
cp umtsmon /usr/local/bin/
chmod 755 /usr/local/bin/umtsmon
after this you can create a launcher in System->preferences->main menu
click on “new item” and create the launcher. as command line use “gksudo umtsmon”. to select a nice looking icon you can click on the icon in the upper right corner and then click on browse and navigate to /usr/src/umtsmon
now you need to either use network monitor or umtsmon but you can’t use both at the same time. since i just bought my mobile internet contract and i am not so confident with the network quality i prefer to use umtsmon for now.
as a short notice to swiss people looking for the right mobile internet connection. i bought the sunrise take@way basic (to try out and whenver i find it ready to be used daily i can upgrade without any minimal contract times to the pro option which is then 49.-chf flat for the whole month) i have it since yesterday and so far the experiance has been rather poor. almost all the time i have to surf using edge. only in the very center of big cities i had better connections. inside buildings it is also very poor.
swisscom seems to be much better but it is also much more expensive. so if you are looking for a “hey at least i’ve got internet” connection, sunrise seems to be a cheap solution. if you really want to be able to work over the internet and to not spend your whole life waiting for that one page to load, it might be worth the cost to get a swisscom contract. but so far i am happy with the “at least i’ve got internet” option
