installing ubuntu 6.06 LTS on a Toshiba Libretto u100

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

boot the desktop verison cd of ubuntu 6.06 and doubleclick the install icon on the desktop. once ubuntu finished installing, don’t reboot, because it won’t boot. that’s because ubuntu utilizes grub as bootloader which for some bios related reasons doesn’t work on the libretto. so open a terminal window and mount and chroot into the root partition of your newly installed ubuntu. let’s assume that ubuntu is installed on /dev/hda2 (because maybe windows is on /dev/hda1 for example)
do the following steps:

sudo mkdir /mnt/ubuntu
sudo mount /dev/hda7 /mnt/ubuntu/
sudo mount -t proc none /mnt/ubuntu/proc
sudo mount -o bind /dev/ /mnt/ubuntu/dev
sudo chroot /mnt/ubuntu /bin/bash
apt-get install lilo
liloconfig

if everything went fine, you should now be able to reboot and boot into the new ubuntu installation. if there where problems with writing the master boot record (in my installation, liloconfig tried to install the mbr to /dev/hda1 instead of /dev/hda (clearly, a partition doesn’t have an mbr, only harddisks do)) you need to do this manually:

lilo.real -M /dev/hda

here’s my xorg.conf (with us keyboard settings, allthough i’d rather use swiss german settings myself)

sound seems to work, so does wlan but there seems to be one problem left: when wlan is activated and a network is in reach, it connects to it and overwrites the dns servers which may cause problems.
